The Editorial Standards of “News Portal” set out how journalistic material is prepared, verified, published and updated. They rest on the principles of accuracy, reliability, independence and accountability to the audience, and supplement the Editorial Policy.
1. Verification of information
- Before publication, facts, figures, names, positions, quotations and other information relevant to the item are verified.
- The editorial team relies on official documents, statements of state bodies, comments from participants in events, expert assessments and other verifiable sources.
- Original sources and official documents take priority. Information obtained from social networks and messengers is verified additionally and is not published as established fact without confirmation.
- The editorial team avoids spreading rumours, conjecture and unconfirmed information. Where necessary, information is presented with a direct reference to the source and an indication that it is unconfirmed.
- Language versions of an item must correspond in substance; where they diverge, the Russian version takes priority.
2. Sources and anonymity
- The editorial team protects the confidentiality of sources where disclosure could harm them or endanger their safety.
- The decision to publish information attributed to an anonymous source is taken by the editor-in-chief. Material based on anonymous sources undergoes additional verification, and its content is confirmed by documents and open data wherever possible.
- An anonymous source is not used to give an item an appearance of reliability in the absence of verifiable confirmation.
3. Working with official statements
- Official statements of state bodies are published to the extent needed to inform the audience, with the original source named at the end of the item.
- The editorial team may clarify the wording of an official statement for clarity without changing its substance, and states that editorial editing has taken place where it affects the meaning.
- Material showing signs of unreliable information or contradicting applicable legislation is not accepted for publication; the sender is informed of the refusal.
4. User-generated content
- Photographs, video recordings, documents and other material received from readers are used only with the consent of the author, their legal representative or on other lawful grounds for publication.
- Where possible, the editorial team verifies the authenticity and currency of such content before publication and clarifies the circumstances and location of the recording.
- The editorial team credits the author of user-generated content or publishes it without a name only at the author's request and where there are no legal obstacles.
- Material containing false information, insults or third parties' personal data is not accepted for publication.
5. Authorship
- Every item is published with the author, the editorial team or another source of authorship indicated.
- Altering a published item without disclosing the change is not permitted where the change affects its meaning.
- The editorial team does not publish items under another person's name and does not attribute to an author statements they did not make.
6. Photographs, video and infographics
- The editorial team uses reliable images and video that match the content of the publication. The source of an image is indicated where necessary.
- Altering a photograph or video recording in a way that distorts the meaning of an event is not permitted. Cropping, colour correction and technical processing that do not affect the meaning are allowed.
- Illustrations created with the use of artificial intelligence technologies are labelled accordingly.
- Images owned by third parties are used only on lawful grounds; the procedure is described in the reuse of materials rules.
7. Use of artificial intelligence
- The editorial team may use artificial intelligence technologies for individual technical tasks: transcribing interviews, translation, information search, preparing drafts and creating illustrations.
- All material prepared with the use of such technologies undergoes mandatory editorial review. The decision to publish is taken by an editor, who is responsible for the accuracy of the published information.
- The use of artificial intelligence technologies is not a reason to lower the requirements for fact-checking.
- Illustrations and other material created with the use of artificial intelligence technologies are labelled; the audience must not be misled about the origin of such material.
8. Updating publications
- Where new confirmed information appears, the editorial team may supplement and update items published earlier, indicating the time of the update.
- If a factual error is identified after publication, it is corrected in accordance with the Corrections Policy.
- Substantial changes are reflected in the text of the item, with the nature of the change indicated.
9. Separation of editorial and advertising content
- Editorial material and advertising content are kept strictly separate. Partner, advertising and sponsored material is labelled in accordance with the requirements of the legislation of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the advertising rules.
- Editorial content is not produced in the interests of advertisers, political organisations or other third parties.
10. References and original sources
- The editorial team names the original source of information, including a link to the official publication where it is available online.
- Links to external resources are provided for the reader's convenience. The editorial team is not responsible for the content or availability of external resources.
- Matters relating to compliance with these standards should be sent to info@example.com.
